CHICAGO HISTORY

Anthony D'Andrea founded the Chicago faction of the LCN and controlled it until 1921. Michele Merlo was boss from 1921 to 1924 and Antonio "Big Tony" Lombardo had control from 1924 to 1928. Al Capone, the most famous gangster in history, took over as boss in 1928. He was brought to Chicago from New York by Lombardo to be the city's top hitman. He was relentless in his killing and violence was not a problem for Capone. He ruled until he was convicted of tax evasion in 1931. About ten years later, Tony Accardo took over and was considered Chicago's best boss. He was very successful in political corruption, controlling the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund and casinos in Las Vegas, and kept the mob very focused on doing their job. He retired as boss in 1956 but stayed as consigliere to the family. He was replaced by Sam Giancana who was most famous for his role in the JFK assassination. Accardo was brought back as the boss to stabalize the family until 1969. He appointed Felix Alderisio to be the new boss. At this time, the Chicago family asserted its dominance in Las Vegas. Anthony "The Ant" Spilotro was sent to Las Vegas as the enforcer for the Chicago outfit in their skim of Las Vegas casinos. He was succeeded by Marshall Caifano and Johnny Roselli as the representante of the Chicago Outfit in Las Vegas. Spilotro became such a public figure that he was murdered in 1986 in a Nevada desert. Now the mob is split up and Joe Monteleone is the boss on the south side, Joe Andriacchi is the boss of the north side, and Anthony Centraccio is the boss of the west side and Dupage County.
